How to Register for a Free Account on GHfind Classifieds

GHfind Classifieds (GHC) is a site designed specifically to cater to Ghanaian markets where interested users can post their own advertisements (classifieds) for free, but if they are doing so for the first time then an account has to be created.  Creating an account on GHC is quick and easy, and here I will go through the three steps needed to complete the process:

1 - Go to the GHC homepage and click "Register" ("Register for a free account" on the mobile version).

2 - Enter your name, email address and password (make sure the two match) and click "Create".

3 - Login to your email, open the message sent to you by GHfind Classifieds and click the validation link.  This will redirect you back to the GHC homepage, where you account has now been validated.  You're all set!

In the future I may implement Captcha or some other type of anti-spam technology to keep fake email addresses from registering on the site, but for now I'll just fight that manually, because again I want registration to be quick and easy in consideration of people who may have slow internet connections or who may not be familiar with software like Captcha.

In the next article I'll go through how to actually post an advertisement on GHfind Classifieds.

Lotty Locks (Professional Dreadlocks Hair Salon)

Lotty is an empress I met a few years back when I first moved to Somanya.  She's an accomplished hairdresser specializing in dreadlocks, and in fact most of the Rastas you may meet in Somanya at some point have had their hair done by her, but as you can see from the video below she's a master hair-braider in general.

Video Size =  5MB

Lotty's lil bro, Andy, sent me some pics of her work so that we can bigup her enterprise, and these images are so outstanding that I've decided to dedicate an entire blog post to them.  So I'll stop writing now and let the pics speak for themselves:

Man do I wish I can get one of the these bad boys, a dreadlocked mohawk!

 Video Size = 1MB

Lotty Locks (Professional Dreadlocks Hair Salon) is located on Akusi Road within walking distance of Somanya Roundabout, the most-recognized landmark in the area.  So even if you don't live in the area but want beautiful dreadlocks, plaiting or any other hairstyle don't hesitate to give her a shoutout @ 024-469-8351.

Tips for Using GHfind Classifieds: Internal Search Optimization

As I stated before the backbone of GHfind Classifieds is a software called Osclass, and as I'm developing the site I'm getting more familiar with exactly how Osclass works, and as such this is the first in a series of articles where I will be giving users insights into how to maximize their experience.

First let me say that in terms of capabilities Osclass' internal search definitely isn't advanced as say Google.  However if you're familiar with its usage it's still a useful tool.  For instance although Osclass offers a robust "Listing Location" feature (that I am currently inputting with every district capital in Ghana) if someone searches for you by location the results won't show.  In other words if you put your location as "Ghana - Eastern Region - Somanya" and someone enters "Somanya" in the search engine on the homepage, you will not be part of the results.  In order to rectify this when noting your location it is recommended that users also input it in the ad description, since this section (and the title excluding the automated location) seems to be primarily where the internal search is pointed.

Of course if you still want to comb through the entire site (including the location listings) to search for particular terms you can always resort to Google.  If you don't know all you have to do is in the search bar enter "", space and then whatever it is you're looking for.  Google's spiders don't pick things on the site as quickly as Osclass' internal search does, but this will give advertisers on GHC the added advantage of having their information, including location, available on Google for the entire world to see, which I anticipate will be mostly advantageous to people in remote areas that are not featured too much on the internet.

Keep Your Business Contact Information Accurate and Up-to-Date

Back in the old days every serious business had its own website.  Personalized websites are good for displaying contact information because the webmaster has practically unlimited space to display such details in any manner and as frequently as the business owner may like.  In the present day most businesses, including SMEs and sole proprietorships, use social-media sites like Facebook instead of building a site of their own.  Facebook is "free" and a great tool that is patronized by over a billion people, but using such sites, which are based on templates that offer only restricted malleability, comes at the cost of being limited in terms of how much data you can present, how and where it is presented, and in some cases you have to possess a certain level of computer knowhow, an attribute not all small business people possess or readily have access to, in order to effectively get your information displayed.

That being said if like most of us you are using sites like FB to advertise your products and services then at least make sure your basic contact information, especially phone number and location, are properly updated so that visitors who desire so will have an easier time contacting you.  Today I visited the FB pages of two homeys whose information I was adding to the GHfind database.  In one case I had to dig through personal messages dude sent me in the past in order to obtain a contact number, and with the other both contact numbers he has displayed don't seem to be functioning.  I'm not trying to make it sound like my phone is always on, but if it's not there's always my email or various other ways I have listed whereas I can be contacted almost immediately.

There really is no sense in having a Facebook business page that is devoid of contact information, and if the only way a client can contact you is through direct messaging then please try to check your messages regularly - at least once a day - and like actually respond.  Business owners who may not be computer savvy enough to accurately input contact information on social-media sites need to employ the services of someone who is, or even better I still hold to the contention that regardless of how many sites you may be registered to if you're marketing to a global audience it's still more advantageous to have your own.  Visiting a social-media site for business information is like going to a fast food joint where the entire menu is displayed on a billboard over the service counter, but having an entire site dedicated to your business can be like dining in a fine restaurant with a 10-page menu.

Introducing GHfind!

I began this project over a year ago as  The express purpose of Krobofind was to promote business in Kroboland.  Kroboland is a part of Ghana in the Eastern Region named after the indigenous people of the area (the Krobos), and I've resided here for the last 5+ years.  The idea of Krobofind dawned on me as I realized that all because I may be broke on a particular day that doesn't mean that everyone in the vicinity was down on cash, and if I could expedite the flow of money throughout the 'hood then there'd be happier days ahead for everyone!

Krobofind didn't work out for a number of reasons, primary amongst them being that my strategy was off from the onset.  I had hired a couple of dudes who, including myself, would actually go out and manually collect information from local merchants, including pictures and prices of individual items for sale, and enter them into a searchable online database that was featured on our site.  This method proved to be insufficient, and some time ago it dawned on me that like Ghanaweb, Tonaton and other similar sites it would be more ideal if users could submit their own information.  Moreover a couple of people close to the project advised me that perhaps the residents of Kroboland don't use the internet regularly enough (in an e-commerce capacity) to make Krobofind successful, and as such I should expand to the rest of Ghana.  Well today I'm glad to announce that, through the use of Osclass, I have designed a site ( similar to Ghanaweb's classifieds' section, which is imperative because although it hasn't been functioning well lately Ghanaweb is still widely viewed, internationally.  Although GHfind is still under development as of now it's by and large functional and ready-to-use.

Osclass is a "free classifieds script" available via Cpanel.  Cpanel is the (free) administrative tool a webmaster is usually granted and indeed must become familiar with upon purchasing a web hosting package.  Although the script is no-cost it's very difficult to manipulate, but the Osclass Team offer a lot of cool themes and plugins that you can purchase and download to make the site more attractive while remodifying it to your personal preferences.   Indeed Cpanel is filled with features that I have no idea what they do, and Osclass was just one of such I stumbled upon while doing research on how to create a classifieds' site.  In other words look for big things from GHfind in the future as we invest more into research & development and innovate a platform that ideologically will edify the entire economy of Ghana.
